This March, Celebrate Women’s History Month with the City of Alexandria
Each Women’s History Month, we take extra time to celebrate the often-overlooked contributions of women. Beginning in 1987, March has been recognized as National Women’s History Month throughout the United States. Here in Alexandria, we are proud to carry on this celebration and commemoration.
How does the City Celebrate Women’s History Month?
During March, venues all around the City host special events including specialty tours, a Women’s history walk, events for female entrepreneurs, author talks at Alexandria Libraries, and more! Here's some event highlights:
- Specialty Tour: A Toast to the Ladies! - Friday, March 7, 6 p.m. at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum
- Women's History Walk - Saturday, March 15 10 a.m., meet at the Alexandria Visitor’s Center with comfortable shoes!
- Specialty Tour: Midwifery - Friday, March 21 6:30 p.m. at the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum
- Money Talk for Women - Tuesdays at Charles E. Beatley Jr. Library from 6 - 7:45 p.m.
- Money Talk for Women is a series aimed at enhancing financial literacy and empowering women to make informed financial decisions.
- How Women’s Liberation Transformed America - Thursday, March 20, 2 p.m., online

The Office of Historic Alexandria also has fantastic resources on women’s history in Alexandria, self-guided walking tours highlighting women’s history, and fascinating biographies of women who contributed to the founding and history of Alexandria.
For resources outside the City, we encourage you to view the online exhibits at the National Women’s History Museum and check out the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA).
Each year, the National Women’s History Alliance designates a theme for Women’s History Month, including educational resources and information. This year’s theme is Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.
