Bridge Inspections and Maintenance

Transportation throughout the City of Alexandria relies on a network of infrastructure, which includes bridges. As part of this expansive network, the City maintains 29 highway bridges and more than 40 pedestrian bridges.

West Glebe Road Bridge

The reconstruction of the West Glebe Road Bridge, which crosses Four Mile Run and connects Arlington County and Alexandria, was completed in September 2023.

CSX Rail Bridge

The City has worked closely with CSX to investigate the cause of a number of pieces of wood falling from the bridge and ensure that proper repairs are made and the bridge remains in safe condition. 

West Glebe Road Bridge

W. Glebe Road Bridge RECONSTRUCTION COMPLETE

Reconstruction on the superstructure of the bridge began in May 2022. The bridge fully reopened in the summer of 2023; the full project (including public art and design enhancements) was completed in September 2023.

CSX Rail Bridge

CSX Rail Bridge over King Street and Commonwealth Ave. Maintenance Update
The rail bridges over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue, in the vicinity of the King Street Metro station, are owned and maintained by CSX. In February 2021, it was reported to the City that a number of pieces of wood had fallen from the bridge, resulting in a temporary closure of King Street. The City has worked closely with CSX to investigate the cause of the issue, to ensure proper repairs are made, and that the bridge remains in safe condition.
