The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions, and committees.  Council will act on these vacancies at the February 14, 2023 City Council meeting.  All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record form electronically via the City’s website at www.alexandriava.gov/Boards  no later than 5:00 p.m. on February 3, 2023.    Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council.  Applicants may only submit an application for one committee at a time.

DUPLICATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. 

Please note the meaning for the following terminology related to board vacancies:

Expiring Term – denotes a term of a current member will be ending soon.  There may or may not be an incumbent applying for the position.

Expired Term - denotes a term has completed and there is not someone in the position.

Immediate Vacancy – synonymous with Expiring Term.  A term of a current member will be ending soon. The incumbent may or may not be reapplying for the position.

 

Ad Hoc Stormwater Utility and Flood Mitigation Advisory Group – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair and staff.

One vacancy for consideration:

One representative of a business group, due to a resignation.

 

Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Two vacancies for consideration:

Two citizen members, due to expiring terms.

 

Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  Task Force meets quarterly.

Three vacancies for consideration:

One citizen member, due to administrative action.

One parent representative of youth of the City of Alexandria, due to an expired term.

One representative from/representing private schools in Alexandria, due to a resignation.

 

Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m

Two vacancies for consideration:

One financial professional, due to a resignation.

One representative of the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, due to a resignation.

 

Beauregard Urban Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair - approximately four hours per month.

One vacancy for consideration: 

One citizen member, due to a resignation.

 

Beautification Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

Four vacancies for consideration: 

Two citizen members, due to expiring terms and resignations.

One member with expertise in the field of landscape architecture or landscape design, due to an expired term.

One member with expertise in the field of architecture or urban planning, or be a historian with architectural knowledge, due to an expired term.

 

Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration: 

One representative for Councilman Aguirre, due to an expired term.

 

Building Code Board of Appeals  – 5-year term

Meeting Schedule:  meetings are called as appeals are filed. 

One vacancy for consideration: 

One alternate member, due to an expired term.

 

Citizen Corps Council – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. 

Four vacancies for consideration: 

One business representative, due to an expired term.

One Alexandria Chapter American Red Cross representative, due to an expired term.

One designee from the Alexandria School Board, due to a resignation.

One Commission on Persons with Disabilities representative, due to an expired term.

 

Commission for the Arts – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration:

One member having expertise in the arts, including, but not limited to, arts educators, professional practitioners of various art disciplines, and professional administrators working in the arts, due to a resignation.

 

Commission on Aging – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. (except July and August)

Four vacancies for consideration: 

One citizen member, due to an expiring.

Three citizen members 60 years or older, due to expired terms.

 

Commission on Employment – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. 

Five vacancies for consideration: 

Three representatives from recognized area businesses including minority-owned and small businesses, due to expired terms.

Two representatives from such organizations as educational agencies, organized labor, rehabilitation agencies community-based organizations, economic development agencies and the area public employment service, due to expired and expiring terms.

 

Commission on HIV/AIDS – 3-year term

Commission on Information Technology – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Monday of every other month.

Four vacancies for consideration: 

One member representing an institution of higher education located in Northern Virginia, due to an expired term.

One student from T. C. Williams High School, due to an expired term.

One Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission representative, due to a resignation.

One member from and representing the Chamber of Commerce, due to a resignation. 

 

Commission on Persons with Disabilities – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration: 

Five citizen members, due to expiring and expired terms.

One business representative, due to an expiring term.

One representative from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to a resignation.

 

Community Policy and Management Team – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  fourth Wednesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration:

One representative of a private organization or association of providers of children's or family services which provides such services within the City on a continuing or consistent basis, due to an expiring term.

One parent representative who is not an employee of any public or private program which received funds from the Children’s Services Act, due to an expired term. 

 

Community Services Board – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule:  first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. (except July and August)

Three vacancies for consideration:

Two consumers (current or former direct recipient of public or private mental health, intellectual disability, or substance abuse treatment rehabilitation services) or family members (immediate family member or the principal caregiver who is not paid) of consumer, due expired terms and a resignation. 

One Sheriff’s Department representative, due to an expired term.

 

Economic Opportunities Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Six vacancies for consideration:

One Category III - Private sector representative, due to an expiring term.

Two Category II - Low Income representative, due to administrative action.

Two Category I - Elected public officials (United States Congress, Virginia State Senators, Virginia State Delegates, Commonwealth's Attorney or Sheriff) currently holding office, due to expired terms.

One Category I - Elected public official (City Council) currently holding office - Councilman Aguirre representative, due to administrative action.

 

Emergency Medical Services Council – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  meets quarterly at the call of the Chair.

One a nursing home representative in the city, due to administrative action.

One Alexandria Hospital administration representative, due to an expired term.

One representative for the Emergency Nurses Association from Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term.

One representative of the Alexandria Red Cross, due to a resignation.

One Emergency Room Physician from Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term.

One representative of the Alexandria Medical Society who has privileges at INOVA Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term. 

 

Environmental Policy Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

One vacancy for consideration:

One citizen member, due to an expiring term.

 

George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Six vacancies for consideration: 

One veteran member, due to an expiring term.

Two citizen members, due to expired terms.

One city manager or a designee, due to an expired term.

One member to be nominated by the City of Alexandria Pipe and Drums, due to an expired term.

One member who attends high school in the City of Alexandria, due to an expired term.

 

Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia– 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair.

One vacancy for consideration:

One provider member, due to an expiring term.

 

Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration:

One Alexandria Association representative, due to an expiring term.

One member who serves as a volunteer at a historic property or attraction which is open to the public on a regularly scheduled basis, due to an expiring term.

One Christ Church representative, due to an expired term.

One ACVA Board representative, due to an expired term.

One Alexandria Society for Preservation of Black Heritage representative or an equivalent organization, due to an expired term.

One business representative (designated by the Chamber of Commerce), due to an expiring and expired term.

One representative of Carlyle House, due to an expired term.

 

Historical Restoration and Preservation Commission – 4-year term

One vacancy for consideration: 

One citizen member appointed by City Council, due to a resignation.

One owner and operator of facilities subject to the federal emergency planning requirements of Super Fund Amendments and reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), due to an expired term.

One representative of a community group, due to expired terms.

 

Potomac Yard Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term

One qualified professional skilled in landscape architecture, architecture or urban design, due to an expiring term.

One citizen at-large with preference given to a citizen who has expertise in property management or who is a business owner, due to an expired term.

Two members from Alexandria law enforcement agencies to be nominated by the head of the agency, due to an ordinance amendment.

One member representing licensed towing and recovery operators doing business in the City of Alexandria, due to an ordinance amendment.

 

Urban Design Advisory Committee - 2-year term

Meeting Schedule:  at the call of the Chair. 

One vacancy for consideration:

One Old Town Business Representative, due to an expiring term.

Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.

Applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall reside outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency wavier is granted by Council, and City Ordinance No. 2641, which states that City employees may not apply for vacancies on boards, commissions, and committees that relate to the responsibilities of the department in which they are employed.
