Sanitary Sewer Asset Renewal Program
Sanitary Sewer Asset Renewal Program
The City is implementing a Sanitary Sewer Asset Renewal Program, which will provide for the inspection and rehabilitation of all City sanitary sewers, manholes, and city-owned portions of lateral sewers. A total of $36 million has been programmed over the next 10 years as part of the City's Sanitary Sewer Capital Improvement Program. The Sanitary Sewer Asset Renewal Program builds on a prior 20-year program the City has implemented to rehabilitate its infrastructure. To date, the City has spent approximately $30 million through rehabilitating more than 60 miles of sanitary sewer, and repairing nearly 3,200 manholes.
Under the Sanitary Sewer Asset Renewal Program, sewers, manholes, and city-owned laterals that are found structurally deficient from the inspection will be rehabilitated. This program will help to preserve and protect existing city-owned sewer infrastructure, extend its useful life, and protect against pipe collapses and other emergency repairs. In addition, this project will help to reduce the amount of infiltration and inflow (I&I) into the sanitary sewer system. Excessive amounts of I&I can result in sanitary sewer back-ups into homes and businesses.
The program consists of multiple phases of inspection and rehabilitation as detailed below.
- The first phase of inspection (Del Ray East) included sanitary sewers generally bounded by Commonwealth Avenue, Four Mile Run, Route 1, and the Metro rail lines. Inspections for the first phase began in March 2021 and concluded in December 2021. For more information about the inspections completed in phase I, click here. Rehabilitation of structurally deficient laterals is anticipated to commence in Spring 2025. Construction schedule and updates can be found on the capital project webpage, Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation - Del Ray East.
- The Second phase of inspections (Del Ray West), west of Commonwealth Avenue, took place from June 2022 to July 2023. For more information about the inspections completed in phase II, click here. Currently, rehabilitation recommendations are being developed for manholes, sewers, and laterals in this area. Rehabilitation construction is anticipated to commence in Winter 2025.
- The third phase of inspections (North Ridge), between Russel Road, West Glebe Road, Cameron Mills Road, and West Braddock Road began in June 2023, and are anticipated to be completed in approximately 9 months. For more information about ongoing inspections, click here.
