Vietnam War Veterans Plaque Dedication on May 27
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 609 and American Legion Post 24, in partnership with the Office of Historic Alexandria, are memorializing Alexandrians who lost their lives in the Vietnam War with a plaque dedication ceremony on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. The plaque will be installed at the city's Monument to its War Dead, located at Alexandria Union Station,110 Callahan Drive.
The Office of the City Historian, Members of VFW Post 609, American Legion Post 24, Alexandria City Officials, and members of other local Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) will attend the ceremony to re-dedicate the “1940 Alexandria Monument to the City’s War Dead in All Wars.” The event will unveil the VSO plaque honoring the City’s 68 Veterans who died in the Vietnam War.
The public and media representatives are invited to attend the ceremony, from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Please arrive by 8:45 a.m. Memorial will take place rain or shine.
Parking is available in the gravel lot and metered spaces.
The VSO, based in Alexandria, initiated a fundraising campaign last December to fund the placement of more plaques at the Alexandria War Memorial. In just five months, the VSO successfully raised $15,000, enough to cover the cost of two plaques. A second duplicate Vietnam War Veteran name plaque will be dedicated on the wall of the Gadsby’s Tavern building at 400 Cameron Street on June 14 (Flag Day) at 6 p.m.
