About Alexandria Health Department
Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is the leading agency protecting and promoting health and well-being in Alexandria, VA. A local health district within the Virginia Department of Health, AHD serves 160,000 Alexandria residents as well as the people who come to our city to work, play, and connect here.
For over a century, AHD has promoted public health through clinical and non-clinical health services, emergency response, community programming, and systems change. AHD tackles a range of health challenges such as disparate health outcomes, infectious diseases, and public health emergencies. Staff work together with community members to create a healthy community where all Alexandrians are able to thrive.

Our Strategic Plan
The Health Department’s Strategic Plan is a tool that guides our department to further its mission and vision. We use this plan when developing, implementing or reviewing programs and services to best serve Alexandria. The current Strategic Plan was drafted in 2023-2024 by AHD staff.
