October Crash Corridor Campaign: Vision Zero in Action
October Crash Corridor Campaign: Vision Zero in Action
As the days get shorter and evenings arrive sooner, visibility and attentiveness on our roadways are more important than ever. This month, we invite you and everyone in our community to join us in making Alexandria’s streets safer for everyone who drives, walks, or bikes through our city.
To support that goal, our APD Traffic Safety Section and patrol officers are increasing traffic enforcement throughout the month, focusing on speeding, distracted driving, and other safety violations. These efforts are part of our ongoing commitment to Vision Zero — Alexandria’s initiative to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries.
Why Crash Corridors Matter
When we look closely at the data, a small number of Alexandria streets account for most of the serious crashes we see each year. These “crash corridors” are where drivers, walkers, and bikers face the highest risks.
In October over the past three years, our city has recorded 73 total crashes with injuries—many clustered along:
- Duke Street & Washington Street
- King Street & I-395
- Duke Street & Van Dorn Street
That’s why we’re concentrating both enforcement and education in these areas—to reduce crashes and make every trip through Alexandria safer for everyone on the road.
Our goal: Zero traffic deaths and serious injuries in Alexandria.
Speed & Reaction Time
One of the biggest factors in crash severity is speed. Even a small increase—just five miles per hour faster—can significantly increase stopping distance and increase the likelihood of serious injuries. This month, officers are conducting high-visibility enforcement in high-risk areas to remind all drivers that slowing down saves lives.
As you travel through these corridors, take a moment to check your speed and create extra space between vehicles. Those small choices can make a major difference when seconds matter.
- Traffic Tip: Slow down — it saves lives.
Distraction & Awareness
Just as speed reduces your reaction time, distractions take your attention away from what matters most — what’s happening right in front of you. It only takes a few seconds of looking down at a phone, adjusting a GPS, or reaching for something in the car to cause a life-changing event.
That’s why APD is reinforcing the importance of staying alert and keeping your eyes on the road. Every trip deserves your full attention.
- Traffic Tip: Eyes up. Phone down.
Community Call to Action
Reducing crashes isn’t just about enforcement — it’s about partnership. Vision Zero depends on each of us making safer choices every day. Whether you’re behind the wheel, on a bike, or crossing the street, your actions have the power to protect lives.
Slow down. Stay alert. Yield to people walking and biking. Together, we can bring crash numbers down and make Alexandria’s streets safer for all.
Safety Starts with Small Choices
Our officers see firsthand how small decisions can have big consequences—and how small changes can save lives. To help keep our community safe, remember to:
- Slow Down: Even small reductions in speed can prevent serious crashes.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and focus on your surroundings.
- Give Space: Leave 3 feet when passing bikes or scooters.
- See & Be Seen: Use headlights and make eye contact at crosswalks.
- Plan Ahead: Expect traffic, obey signals, and follow detours.
Each safe choice adds up to a safer city.
Turning Data into Action
The numbers tell a story — but our actions define the outcome. Let’s turn what we know into what we do. By making safer choices and supporting enforcement in crash corridors, we can reduce injuries, protect our neighbors, and help achieve Vision Zero.
