Sudden Death Incident Ruled Homicide
For Immediate Release: February 21, 2023
(*Update: 2/21/2023*) -- The Medical Examiner has ruled this sudden death incident as a gun-related homicide.
On February 17, 2023, the Alexandria Police Department arrested, Junior Espinal Calix, 19 years of age, a City of Alexandria resident in connection with this incident. Espinal Calix was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
The victim was 21-year-old Nabel Chávez.

ALEXANDRIA, VA. – The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a sudden death that occurred on Friday, February 17, 2023, in the unit block of East Reed Avenue.
At approximately 2:50 PM, APD responded to the area for a sudden death. The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner.
A subject was taken into custody without incident and was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
