Plan Your Commute: Potomac Yard–VT Metro Station Opens May 19
For Immediate Release: May 18, 2023
On Friday, May 19, the Potomac Yard–VT Metrorail Station will open to riders in the City of Alexandria and across the region. The opening of the station–the result of more than a decade of planning and work by the City of Alexandria, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), and other key stakeholders–reaffirms the City’s commitment to making safe, efficient, public transportation options more accessible to everyone.
In anticipation of the station’s grand opening, the City encourages residents to review related changes and improvements to local transit service and revise their travel and commute plans to include the new station.
For help with incorporating the new Metro station into your commute, consult GO Alex, Alexandria’s resource for transportation options, or Metro’s Trip Planner tool. New stations closer to the entrances will be added in the coming months. See the Capital Bikeshare system map for additional details.
Safety Improvements
In anticipation of the station opening, a variety of safety and access enhancements were recently implemented along Potomac Avenue, adjacent to the Potomac Yard–VT Station.
At Potomac Avenue and Evans Lane, as well as Potomac Avenue and Exchange Avenue, new traffic signals have been installed to facilitate safer crossings to and from the Metro Station.
At Potomac Avenue and Glebe Road, a new bus lane, "No Turn on Red" restrictions, leading pedestrian intervals that give people walking a head start into an intersection, and a new median refuge that creates safer crossing across Potomac Avenue are among the changes to help facilitate safe access to and from the station.
These safety improvements are aligned with the City’s Complete Streets and Vision Zero initiatives, which enhance traffic safety and design streets to meet the needs of all roadway users, as well as the Alexandria Mobility Plan, which ensures that transportation options meet the diverse mobility needs of residents.
