What We Do
Administration
Provides administrative oversight of all functional areas within the Department including: fiscal year operating and capital improvement budget oversight and administration, reporting for the departmental strategic plan, negotiating and managing City building and facility leases, Animal Shelter management and animal control contract, City Surplus Real Estate program, Print & Mail Services, and the Old Town Farmers Market.
Energy Management
The Office of Energy Management is responsible for delivering community energy programs and leading climate change action to ensure the fiscal strength of the City government and achievement of results that the Alexandria community values. The City’s energy management program is responsible for managing and reducing the City’s energy use, utility costs, and greenhouse gas emissions from City facilities and vehicle fleet. Energy Management delivers the following services to the Alexandria community: community energy programs; City operations energy management; utility acquisition and management; facility engineering; energy assurance and reliability; and utility regulatory and policy affairs.
Event Planning and Support Services
Special Events are managed through a consortium of city departments. The Department of General Services is responsible for scheduling the use of City Hall, Market Square, and the Old Town Farmers' Market.
Facility Management
The Facilities operation is responsible for maintaining the 2.4 million square feet of public buildings owned by the City of Alexandria. Facilities is also responsible for planning and managing all building renovations and new city building construction projects, and providing special event set-up and staffing support.
Print and Mail Services
The Print and Mail Services Division of General Services is responsible for mail services and internal and outsourced printing and copying for the City. Services are provided to all City departments. Most City Departments receive their USPS mail via General Services' courier. Mail is delivered both to City Hall and satellite buildings. Most print and copy requests can be completed by the Mailroom; however more complex printing or higher volume printing or copying may require your job to be sent to one of our highly qualified vendors. In addition, the Mailroom carries a variety of paper stocks your department may use.
Real Estate Acquisition & Disposition
The Department of General Services is responsible for the disposition of all City-owned real estate that has been designated surplus by the Alexandria City Council and the acquisition of new City-owned real estate.
