Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Plan (FAMIS)
FAMIS
FAMIS is program of the Commonwealth of Virginia to provide health insurance to children under 19 years-old who are uninsured and who are not eligible for Medicaid.
There are several ways to obtain an application to apply for FAMIS:
- Find eligibility information and apply on-line at the Common Help website, after which you will be interviewed at your local social services office, the Alexandria Department of Community and Human Services.

There are various Medical Assistance Programs offered in Virginia. Each program covers different groups of people and each program has different eligibility requirements. At Common Help, applicants can be screened for all possible programs based on age, income, financial resources and other information. To be eligible, applicants must meet the financial and non-financial eligibility conditions for the program. For information about Medical Assistance Programs other than FAMIS, such as those for pregnant women, parents and caretakers of dependent children, persons age 65 or older, those who are blind or have a disability, and Medicare and SSI recipients. FAMIS Prenatal Coverage
FAMIS Prenatal Coverage is full coverage for pregnant individuals who do not meet immigration status rules for other coverages. Individuals do not need to meet immigration status rules, provide immigration documents or have a Social Security number to be eligible for FAMIS Prenatal Coverage; individuals must live in Virginia, meet income rules and be uninsured as well as provide the estimated date of delivery and how many children are expected.
