Mount Vernon Trail Improvements at East Abingdon Drive
Project Description
The purpose of this project is to widen the Mount Vernon Trail along East Abingdon Drive, north of Slater's Lane. Currently, the trail is too narrow for trail users to comfortably pass each other. This project will widen the trail from approximately 4.5 feet to 10 feet, which is consistent with the rest of the City’s trail network and will allow trail users to pass side-by-side more comfortably.
Overall Project Status: Design
Project Background
This project was identified as a Top 10 Priority Trail Crossing/Transition Improvement in the Pedestrian & Bicycle Chapter of the Transportation Master Plan. The National Park Service's Mount Vernon Trail Corridor Study also noted insufficient trail widths as a general challenge and recommended widening the trail where feasible.
This project supports the Alexandria Mobility Plan strategy to create a safe, well-maintained, and comfortable bicycling network.
This project is funded by a federal grant administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
