SilverSneakers® Fitness Program
The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) is partnering to provide complimentary memberships to eligible City residents to the nationally recognized SilverSneakers® program. SilverSneakers® is the nation’s leading community fitness program designed exclusively for older adults.
Founded in 1992, SilverSneakers® helps older adults take greater control of their health through a variety of fitness offerings that engages participants in more frequent strength training, aerobic, and flexibility exercise by providing access to a variety of venues and programming designed specifically for older adults. There are more than 14.5 million people eligible for the SilverSneakers® benefit through the nation’s leading Medicare Advantage health plans, Medicare Supplement carriers and group retiree plans. Power-Plus Clubs are ongoing and are free unless otherwise noted, please see our latest Power Plus brochure above for date, time, and location details. City Residents only. For more information and to confirm activity, contact the recreation center where the club is located. Recreation Center ID cards are required (provided free with proof of City residency).
55+ Game Nights
Play table games and cards while enjoying entertainment, refreshments, and new friends.
Coffee Social Hour
Enjoy coffee and cake with new and old friends.
Dance Fitness
Learn the basic steps of line dance for new and old dances. No partner needed.
Del Ray Robust Walking Group
This wholesome pathway to successful aging weaves low-intensity exercises into a walk.
Del Ray Seniors
Weekly meeting to discuss ideas and topics that center on healthy living programs, exercise and fitness, health screenings, and recreational and leisure opportunities. Quarterly luncheons, field trips and guest speakers are also part of the social experience.
Game Day
Enjoy board games, cards, or billiards in a fun social environment.
Hand Dancing
Enjoy one of the fastest-growing activities. It is a male-led performance, with both partners performing syncopated turns and steps.
Silver Screen Movie
Seniors, pop on over for a great time watching movies and enjoying snacks. Bring a movie or suggest one to the group.
Strength and Conditioning Club
A self-directed group activity to motivate individuals to continue a personal fitness plan and cardiovascular workout. A Recreation Center ID and Recreation Center Fitness Pass are required. Participants are encouraged to consult with their physician before participation.
Table Tennis
Join us for a few hours of table tennis as we 'Get Active to Stay Active.' Play on two tables with balls and paddles provided. All skill levels are welcome.
Tai Chi
Originally developed for self-defense, tai chi has evolved into a graceful form of exercise used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions.
Walking Club
Connect with others who share your health goals and be a part of a fun group!
Zumba
Want to have fun while exercising? This safe, self-directed fitness workout combines Latin dance and modern-day hip hop.

Pickle Ball Open Play
What do you get when you combine badminton, tennis, and ping-pong? The sport known as Pickleball is a popular and quickly growing sports program for active adults. Meet new friends, socialize, and enjoy weekly challenge games and quarterly workshops. Residents free, nonresidents $8.

Recreation Center Fitness Passes
There are multiple pass options for the use of the fitness rooms and other amenities at the following recreation centers: Charles Houston, Chinquapin, Leonard "Chick" Armstrong, Patrick Henry, and William Ramsay. Alexandria residents 55 and older are eligible to receive a 20% discount on fitness passes and classes.
Robust Walking

Northern Virginia Senior Olympics
The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics Program is held annually and open to all residents ages 50 years and older. Compete in 25 indoor and outdoor events including track, swimming, golf, scrabble, bowling, basketball, line dancing, pickle ball, table tennis, cycling, and many more. The NVSO program promotes health, fitness and psychological well-being for older adults by providing opportunities for participation, competition, self-improvement and fellowship through various athletic and recreational events. NVSO is sponsored by the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics Committee which includes the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William. Registration is required.

Other Services for Seniors
Successful Aging Committee (SAC)
A group of program managers who collaborate to share information and provide several citywide activities for older adults in Alexandria. For additional information, please call 703.746.5429 or 703.746.5676. SAC events include:
- Dance for All Ages - an intergenerational spring dance sponsored by the committee and the Student Government Association of T.C. Williams High School. DJ music, dancing, light refreshments and a very good time are the order of the evening.
- Senior Health & Fitness Fair - information tables, screenings, exercise demos and more in celebration of annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day. Last Wednesday in May.
- Holiday Luncheon - Fellowship, entertainment and holiday cheer including a delicious lunch.

A local non-profit organization that offers support and services to seniors living in the City of Alexandria, including Meals on Wheels, DOT Paratransit reservations, Groceries-to-Go, Friendly Visitors, Senior Information Corners, monthly Senior Speaker Series events and a Senior Ambassador Program. The Alexandria Adult Day Services Center is a daytime program for older adults with physical and/or cognitive limitations. The program offers therapeutic recreation programs, leisure activities and nutritional meals for center participants to help increase their physical, mental, emotional and social abilities. It also provides respite and support for caregivers.
