Simpson Dog Park Closed for Renovation
The City of Alexandria Departments of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, and Project Implementation are renovating the existing Eugene Simpson Stadium Park Dog Park. The final design was completed in 2021 with considerable community input.
The City of Alexandria continues to work toward completing the outstanding project elements. The project is anticipated to reach substantial completion in July 2024 and will be opened to the community shortly afterward. Outstanding items include completion of the fencing, concrete work, installation site amenities, and minor site restoration.
The City dog park across the street from Eugene Simpson Park at 521 East Monroe Avenue is open and available to all members of the community during and after renovations are completed.

Project Description
In 2022 the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities and Department of Project Implementation will begin construction to renovate the dog park at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park. Proposed improvements are based on the findings of substantive community outreach, which culminated in the 2014 Simpson Stadium Park Improvement Plan and subsequent community input resulting in the final dog park design in 2021. The improvements are funded through the City of Alexandria’s Capital Improvement Program.

Schedule
- Design and Planning completed in February 2022
- Construction to begin November 7, 2022
- Substantial Completion: July 2024
- Open to the Public: July 15 at noon
The Eugene Simpson Stadium Dog Park will reopen to the community on Monday, July 15 at noon. The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities, and Project Implementation have completed major outstanding items following the termination of the construction contractor. The park is now safe and ready for community use. Park users will notice a few unfinished items to be completed such as a new message board, replacement plantings, and reconnecting the lights that do not require the dog park to remain closed for intended use. New trees and small sections of turf will remain fenced off to allow for establishment through the fall. In early August, the park will be closed for 2-3 days to facilitate the reconnection of the lights. The community will be notified in advance of any dog park closures to carry out the outstanding work.
- Open to the Public: July 15 at noon
Design Phase
The final design was completed in early 2021 following community input and design requests. Construction drawings were completed in March 2021 and the project began the procurement process.

The construction contractor was released from the project. The majority of the work is complete, although there are important items remaining to allow the park to safely open to the public. The City anticipates delivery within 3-4 months (June/July 2024).
