1 & 7 East Del Ray Avenue Park (Judy Lowe Neighborhood Park)

In 2008 the City acquired these two properties located in the Del Ray area of Alexandria for use as a pocket park. Pocket parks are designed to meet the needs of those who live or work within a tenth of a mile of their location. They are less than 20,000 square feet, and may include such elements as public gardens, seating areas, passive open space, landscaped areas, important natural features, or trees.

Project Overview

A park plan was developed with extensive public input, and approved by the Park and Recreation Commission in 2009.  The approved park plan includes improvements such as enhanced landscaping, seating areas, stormwater management, and a small play area.

Road work on Commonwealth Avenue to continue;  Del Ray Avenue road work scheduled to begin the Week of June 27.
Commonwealth Avenue Disruptions Anticipated the Week of June 13

Work at intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Del Ray Avenue is anticipated to begin the week of June 13.  Expect lane closures and traffic disruptions during work hours.

Park Construction Scheduled to begin the Week of May 30

Public Invited to Attend Community Pre-Construction Meeting for Park Improvements at 1 & 7 E. Del Ray Avenue Park

The public is invited to attend a Community Pre-Construction Meeting to discuss upcoming construction for 1 & 7 East Del Ray Avenue Park, Alexandria, VA 22301.  The meeting will be held on Monday, April 4 at 7 p.m., on-site at the Park.   Rain location: Mt. Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301.

  • Park and Recreation Commission Approves Plans for the Pocket Park located at 1&7 East Del Ray Avenue
    On January 15, 2009 the City of Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission approved the plans for the pocket park located at 1&7 East Del Ray Avenue. The approved design was the result of significant public input and refinement of the draft plan reviewed by the Commission at its December 2008 public hearing. The attached images of the park elements and design are representative of the final product(s), but may not be the exact match of what will appear in the park. The final details, materials and equipment will be established when the funding is available to proceed with park construction and installation.

  • Public Hearing Scheduled for Pocket Park at 1 and 7 East Del Ray Avenue
    The City of Alexandria’s Park and Recreation Commission invites residents to attend a public hearing to review and discuss the park plan for the property at 1 and 7 East Del Ray Avenue. The public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, November 20 at 7 p.m., at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St. Individuals who are unable to attend the public hearing can send written comments to the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, Attention: William Chesley, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314, or by e-mail to william.chesley@alexandriava.gov by Monday, December 8.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue. The property was acquired in January 2008 as part of the City’s Pocket Park Program.
