City of Alexandria Teams Are Ready to Address Overnight Weather Conditions

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for our area until 10 a.m. Monday. Rain has changed to snow this evening, and snow may continue through tonight. City crews are ready to respond as conditions change. Please use caution if you must travel and follow official City channels for updates.

About Winter Weather Response

With rain and above‑freezing temperatures ahead of the changeover, crews are not pre‑treating roads. Brine and salt would wash away before the snow arrives. However, crews will begin salt application as soon as the rain ends. Plowing will begin once there is enough accumulation for equipment to be effective.

How You Can Help

  • If you’re able, please move vehicles off the street and into a driveway or garage. This gives crews more room to work.

  • When plows are active, please stay off the roads if you can. That helps crews clear streets more quickly and safely.

  • If you must travel in winter weather, slow down and allow extra time. Use major routes when possible. Please give plows plenty of space and avoid passing or driving alongside them. For regional road conditions, call 5-1-1.

  • After the snowfall ends, use caution while shoveling and take frequent breaks. With today’s rain and milder temperatures, the snow may be wetter and heavier than usual.

  • Residents can also sign up with Volunteer Alexandria’s Snow Buddy program to help neighbors clear sidewalks and driveways who may be unable to complete cleanup work themselves.
  • Stay informed about service delays, closures, or other weather updates by visiting  alexandriava.gov/alert or subscribing to City eNews alerts and social media platforms.

Thank you for your continued cooperation as we respond to the inclement weather conditions.
