City of Alexandria to Install 870 Manhole Inserts to Reduce Stormwater Runoff into Sanitary Sewers
The City of Alexandria, through its contractor, is working to install 870 stainless steel manhole inserts in the Four Mile Run, Commonwealth, and Taylor Run sewersheds. These inserts will help prevent stormwater runoff from entering sanitary sewer manholes during wet weather.
Manhole inserts are pan-shaped devices that sit at the top of the manhole, directly underneath the manhole cover. The inserts have a hole that slowly drains accumulated stormwater into the sewer after the storm ends. Manhole inserts are one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce inflow into the sanitary sewer system. Inflow into sanitary sewers can overwhelm the capacity of the sewer system, which can lead to sewer backups in basements.
Installation began during the month of February 2024. Each insert takes approximately 20 minutes to install. During installation, the contractor may designate areas where vehicles cannot be parked. Signs will be posted following City guidelines. Contractors will post no parking signs at least 72 hours in advance. Installation is expected to be completed by the end of June 2024.
