City of Alexandria Seeking Input on Design Elements to Improve Transit and Travel along Duke Street

Now, through October 28, the City is hosting a variety of events and activities to share conceptual street design elements for Duke Street and gather input on priorities and tradeoffs.

This is the second community input phase of Duke Street In Motion, a bus-focused improvement project extending from West End Alexandria to the King Street Metro Station, currently funded with $87 million of regional revenues from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority.

Community input will contribute to deciding which elements to advance into further design, analysis, and additional public input as the City works to develop a final design recommendation for Duke Street In Motion.

There are several ways to get involved and share input:

   • Segment 1 (West End Alexandria – Jordan Street): Thursday, October 20, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Patrick Henry Rec Center
   • Corridor-wide Open House (no presentation at this meeting): Wednesday, October 26, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. (drop in any time), Patrick Henry Rec Center

While each segment meeting will focus on one particular area, there will be information and opportunity for input on the entire corridor. Visit the website for details related to these meetings.

Bishop Ireton is a 5-minute walk from the Duke Street and Cambridge Road DASH Route 30 and a 9-minute walk from the Alexandria Commons Metrobus 28A bus stop. Patrick Henry Rec Center is a 10-minute walk from the Duke Street and Jordan Street DASH Route 30 and Metrobus 28A bus stop. Parking is available on site at both meeting locations.

Childcare and Spanish interpretation will be available at all events.

Duke Street In Motion kicked off in 2021, with a series of events to gather community input about visions for the future of traveling on Duke Street. Based on input from over 1,800 people during the summer 2021, Duke Street In Motion has established a vision to provide an efficient and desirable bus rapid transit (BRT) option along Duke Street by improving the transit experience for current and potential riders. With multimodal enhancements to the corridor, Duke Street will become a safe, efficient, and desirable community connector for people riding the bus, walking, biking, and driving.
