Temporary Exhibit Opens at Apothecary Museum: “Disease and the Apothecary”

Starting September 26, 2025, venture to the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum to discover the world of disease! This new temporary exhibit introduces visitors to three diseases that posed serious health threats during the apothecary shop’s 141 years of operation – Smallpox, Yellow Fever, and Influenza. All three diseases caused health emergencies, killing thousands of people, and all three required the intervention of public health measures to reduce or prevent the spread. Objects and archival material show how scientific innovations and collective action saved lives.

The small exhibit is located on the museum’s first floor (105-107 S Fairfax St., Alexandria) and is part of admission. Alexandria residents receive free entry!

The exhibit is also available online. Visitors can quickly access the text using the QR code on the museum’s opening panel.
