Explore Alexandria’s History with Family Day and Specialty Tours at Gadsby's Tavern Museum
Don’t miss your last chance this summer to experience Family Day with Young Historians! The season wraps up this Sunday, August 31, from 2–5 p.m. at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, 134 N. Royal Street. Reserve your tickets at: https://shop.alexandriava.gov/Events.aspx.
During Family Day, Junior Docents—students in grades 4th through 7th—bring the museum to life as they lead tours and share stories of early Alexandria. This interactive program features hands-on activities such as chocolate making and period clothing demonstrations. These fun, interactive activities are included with regular museum admission, and City of Alexandria residents are free.
Through the museum’s objects and activities, families will discover how Alexandria was connected to the world and the diverse people who lived and worked here. Visitors from past years have praised the Junior Docents’ enthusiasm and unique perspective as an “exciting treat” that adds a “fun element” to the tour.
Make sure to catch this final Family Day of the season—a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see history through the eyes of Alexandria’s youngest historians.

About Gadsby’s Tavern Museum
As America began as a nation during the late 18th century and emerged in the 19th century, Gadsby’s Tavern was the center of social and political life in Alexandria as well as the new Federal City of Washington. The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents – including George Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history. Tavern keepers John Wise and John Gadsby hosted balls, performances, and meetings, and their accommodations were known as the best by travelers near and far. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is located at 134 North Royal Street in the heart of Old Town Alexandria and is owned and operated by the City of Alexandria.
