The Office of Historic Alexandria invites the public to celebrate Black History Month this February with a dynamic lineup of events and activities. Black History Month is an annual recognition of the history, culture, achievements, and contributions of African Americans and persons of African descent in U.S. history. Join us in commemorating this important month with the following events:
February 2025 Events
Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Exhibition
When: February 1–28, 2025
Where: Vola Lawson Lobby of City Hall
Admission: Free
Description: For over 30 years, Alexandria City Public School students in grades 2–5 have created vibrant posters honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These works of art will be on display throughout February. More information here.
The African American Cowboy and the Forgotten Creators of Country Music
When: Saturday, February 1, 11:00 AM–1:00 PM
Where: The Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street
Admission: Free
Description: Explore the significant contributions of African Americans to country and western music and culture, from legendary cowboy Bill Pickett to modern icons like Beyoncé Knowles. Hosted by the NAACP in partnership with the Alexandria Black History Museum. Register here.

American Hair Wrap History: The History of African American Salons
When: Saturday, February 8, 11:30 AM–1:00 PM
Where: The Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street
Admission: Free
Description: Dr. Darnella McGuire-Nelson will explore Black women’s natural hair in the workplace and the cultural significance of Black hair salons as spaces of refuge and empowerment. Learn about the CROWN Act and engage in discussions about hair and identity. Register here.
The Washington Revels Jubilee Voices Concert
When: Sunday, February 16, 2:00 PM
Where: The Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street
Admission: Free
Description: Join Washington Revels Jubilee Voices and the Office of Historic Alexandria’s Division of African American History to celebrate African American music, history and culture in a concert exploring the themes of freedom, resistance and resilience, from the Civil War through the present day.
