Join members of the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project as we partner with The Equal Justice Initiative to memorialize Joseph McCoy and Benjamin Thomas, lynched in this city in 1897 and 1899 respectively, with a soil collection ceremony followed by a pilgrimage to Montgomery, Ala. to deliver the soil jars bearing their names to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.
Registration for the Oct. 6-10, 2022, pilgrimage closes Sept. 6, 2022, as does the opportunity to book a discounted room block rate at the Embassy Suites Hotel.
The pilgrimage will focus on the history and legacy of racial terror in this country as well as the struggle for civil rights. Participants will have access to some amazing tours provided by veteran activists, meaningful dining experiences, and a trip to Selma that includes a walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
There are still bus seats and self-travel options available and due to a recent donation by the Foundation for Racial Equity we have extended our deadline to Sept. 4 for need based scholarship applications. Please write to acrp@alexandriava.gov to request a scholarship application.
Learn more about the itinerary and registration for the trip and then book your room. Please be aware that direct flights are limited, and it would be best to book flights before registering for the trip.
Important dates:
The Soil Collection Ceremony to honor the lives and deaths of Joseph McCoy and Benjamin Thomas will be held on Sept. 24, 2022, at 4 p.m. on Market Square. This is a free event, and all are welcome.
Buses will leave Alexandria on Thursday, Oct. 6 bound for Montgomery, Ala. and return on Monday, Oct. 10, 2022. For self-travel registrants, transportation is provided in Montgomery between events. This event has a limited capacity and participants must register to attend as well as book their own hotel.
