This October, the City of Alexandria is celebrating Energy Awareness Month with a month-long series of events, activities, and tips designed to help residents save energy, save money, and make more sustainable choices. 

Each week will highlight a different energy and sustainability theme: Transportation, Homes, Waste & Reuse, and Green Buildings & Landscaping.

Transportation Week | October 4–10 

Transportation Week will highlight ways to get around Alexandria using less energy and producing fewer emissions. Test drive electric vehicles (EVs) and e-bikes at the EV Ride and Drives at Lindsay Motors on October 4, or at Carlyle Square on October 7.  

Want to brush up on your bike skills? The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) has several different bike education classes throughout the month.  

Homes Week | October 11–17 

Homes Week will focus on energy efficiency, comfort, and ways residents can reduce energy use at home.  

Don’t miss the home weatherization workshop with My Favorite Fixer on October 17. Participants will get hands-on experience with materials and tools that can help make homes more energy efficient and comfortable during colder weather. The workshop is FREE for Alexandria residents, and participants will go home with a free energy efficiency kit to put the weatherization skills into practice. Register today!

Waste & Reuse Week | October 18–24 

Waste and Reuse Week will encourage residents to rethink how they use materials and find ways to give useful items a new or second life. Check out the Alexandria Library’s Community Repair Event on October 24 and bring small appliances, electronics and furniture in need of repair, and watches in need of new batteries.  

Green Buildings & Landscaping Week | October 25–31 

The final week will explore how Alexandria is creating more energy-efficient buildings and healthier outdoor spaces. Get hands-on experience with electric leaf blowers from various suppliers at an Electric Leaf Blower Demonstration on October 27 at Ben Brenman Park. The demonstration comes ahead of Alexandria's November 17, 2026, gas-powered leaf blower ban.  

On October 29, the City will host a Green Building Webinar featuring lessons learned from passive house design and construction.
