Shaping Alexandria’s Future: Highlights from the FY 2026 Budget Process
On April 30, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted the $956.5 million Fiscal Year 2026 operating budget, which takes effect July 1, 2025. The budget includes no increase to the real estate tax rate, offering residents predictability during uncertain times. At the same time, the budget continues to reflect City Council’s priorities of equity, economic strength, and investing in Alexandria’s dedicated City employees.
Building on Progress by Funding Priorities
Key priorities in the budget include continued support for early childhood services, Neighborhood Health, and community food hubs, underscoring the city's investment in public well-being and equitable access programs.
Our youth remain a central focus, with Alexandria City Public Schools receiving a $9.4 million funding increase, including a $1.2 million allocation specifically for student and family support initiatives. The city also increased funding for DASH to keep pace with inflation and fulfill collective bargaining agreements.
To balance investments with fiscal responsibility, the City identified $6.4 million in savings through targeted efficiency improvements and cost-cutting measures. These cost-saving measures allowed the City Council to adopt a budget without changing personal property, sewer, or refuse rates.
Mayor Alyia Gaskins, City Manager James Parajon, and the Alexandria City Council thanked residents and staff for their collaboration in shaping a budget that reflects Alexandria’s values.
“I would hope that when the community looks at our budget, everyone sees something for them, whether their priority is schools, affordable housing, climate change, or investing in our youngest learners through the expansion of early childhood programs,” said Mayor Alyia Gaskins. “I want to thank each and every one of you who contributed to this year’s budget process to build a budget that responds to Alexandria’s needs and priorities.”
