Did you know you can get a $300 tax break just for storing your guns safely?

A newly enacted state law lets Virginia taxpayers claim a tax credit of up to $300 for the purchase of qualifying safety equipment on their taxes for years 2023 through 2027. There is $5 million available on a first-come, first-served basis. A qualifying taxpayer may claim this credit once annually until the allocated money has been claimed or the period expires.

To take advantage of the law, interested parties must have purchased a gun safe, case, or other locking firearm storage device from a federally licensed dealer in a transaction that does not include a firearm. The Virginia Department of Taxation is finalizing the process for claiming the credit, but you will need to provide receipts to be approved. Be on the lookout for final guidance later in the year.

The City of Alexandria makes other efforts to encourage gun safety. Through the Lock and Talk Virginia campaign, the City provides free firearm cables and trigger locks to residents. No information is collected, and there is no limit.

The service is provided in an effort to curb accidental shootings and suicide. Studies show that individuals are three times more likely to die by suicide when firearms are accessible. In 61% of suicides, firearms are the cause of death. Individuals interested in receiving a lock or more information about the equipment can do so at the following locations and times:

  • Alexandria Sheriff’s Office (2003 Mill Rd.), 24 hours a day.
  • Clerk of Courts Office (520 King St., room 307), 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Health Department (4850 Mark Center Dr.), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Department of Community & Human Services (4850 Mark Center Dr.), 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Alexandria Library locations, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday
    • Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library (5005 Duke St.)
    • Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library (717 Queen St.)
    • Ellen Coolidge Burke Branch Library (4701 Seminary Rd.)
    • James M. Duncan, Jr. Branch Library (2501 Commonwealth Ave.)

As always, gun owners should exercise responsibility. Remember the following tips:

  1. Lock up your unloaded firearm in a secure safe, case, or cabinet for storage.
  2. Secure unloaded firearms with a firearm locking device.
  3. Avoid storing your firearm in your vehicle.
  4. Store your ammunition in a separate secure location.
  5. Keep a record of your firearm’s make, model, and serial number.

Be safe, Alexandria!
