In response to yesterday’s storm, the City of Alexandria rapidly deployed staff to clear downed trees and other debris. These efforts are still underway.

Dominion Energy is still reporting power outages across Northern Virginia.  There are approximately 3,200 Alexandria customers without power. These outages are storm related and the outage status will continue to fluctuate.  Restoration times are currently unavailable. Outages can be reported and viewed online at dominionenergy.com/outages or reported at 866.366.4357.

Cooling Centers

Cooling centers are offered at the following recreation centers today, July 30. All cooling centers are operating under normal business hours.

  • Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.): Open from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility (3210 King St.): Open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

The Alexandria Library branches below are also open for cooling from 1-5 p.m.

  • Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library (5005 Duke St.)
  • Kate Waller Barrett Branch (717 Queen St.)
  • Ellen Coolidge Burke Branch (4701 Seminary Rd.)
  • James M. Duncan, Jr. Branch (2501 Commonwealth Ave.)

Roadways and Debris

No major roadways are closed at this time. The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) asks residents to set their large collections on the curbside in front of their homes and be aware of clearance above and around their piles of debris. These collections should not all go in one pile—please follow guidelines for separating debris below. This will allow City staff quicker access. Staff cannot collect with grapple trucks if there is no clearance from lines above.

Wires: Stay at least 30 feet away from any wires. Treat all wires as if they are electric wires, and report them to Dominion Energy at 866.DOM.HELP (866.366.4357).

Street Lights and Poles: The City has moved fallen poles out of roadways and is working to move poles in other areas that present safety hazards. Please report damaged or inoperable street lights to
Dominion Energy. Include the pole number if you can safely read it.

Yard Waste: There is likely to be a significant amount of yard waste as cleanup progresses. It may take collection days this week and next week to collect everything. Please place tree limbs and other larger pieces of yard waste next to trash cans and without blocking vehicles or pedestrians. Place smaller pieces in paper bags or containers with City-issued ‘Yard Waste’ stickers so crews can identify it. More information on how to properly prepare yard waste is available at
alexandriava.gov/YardWaste.

House and Other Debris: Shingles, gutters, metal flashing and more have all come off buildings during this storm. There are different disposal requirements depending on the material. See
alexandriava.gov/RefuseCollection to learn how to handle larger pieces of debris.

All reported tree-related emergencies have been triaged by Urban Forestry staff and dispatched to City staff for removal. Urban forestry staff remains on call and in the City to respond to any new reports as they come in.
