Alexandria Health Department Recognizes National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2024
The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is encouraging residents to recognize National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) this February 7, 2024.
This day, observed nationally, allows people to reflect on how Black people are disproportionately affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Alexandria’s local data reflects this national trend. While Black, non-Hispanic residents make up about 21% of the City’s population, they account for 56% of Alexandrians living with HIV/AIDS, based on 2022 data from the U.S. Census and the Virginia Department of Health. This disparity is not due to higher risk behavior, but instead, is a result of stigma, systemic racism, and barriers to care.
On NBHAAD, we recognize that in order to prevent future HIV infections among Black Alexandrians, we must encourage conversations that reduce stigma about HIV diagnoses. We must also improve access to HIV testing, care, and education. Together we can educate, engage, and empower Alexandrians about this crucial work.
