The Alexandria Fire Department Releases the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan

Today the Alexandria Fire Department made public its 2022-2027 Strategic Plan (“Plan”). The Plan articulates the Fire Department’s priorities which were developed after candid conversations with members of the community and the workforce.
The Fire Department initiated the strategic planning process as part of its continuous improvement journey through accreditation with the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE). The process included an analysis of the organization's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) and identifying critical issues and service gaps. Based on feedback from the community and workforce and discussions with a diverse group of organizational stakeholders, the Fire Department identified the following strategic initiatives as the foundation for developing the goals and objectives of the Plan:
- Communication
- Recruitment and Retention
- Training
- Succession Planning
- Staffing
- Equipment and Infrastructure
The Plan’s goals and objectives, together with the strategic vision and performance measures, showcase how the department intends to achieve its goals and focus on its priorities. The 2022-2027 Strategic Plan focuses on six strategic goals:
- Establish and implement an internal and external communication strategy that enlightens, educates, informs, and provides opportunities for community and employee engagement.
- Develop an effective recruitment and retention strategy that addresses the needs of the Alexandria Fire Department, meets the collective bargaining requirements, and adheres to legal and budgetary constraints.
- A comprehensive continuum of education that provides guidance, training, and professional development to all staff in a manner that meets the department’s needs.
- Develop a succession planning model that cultivates internal candidates, develops employees based on strengths, encourages advancement within the organization, and fosters the retention of institutional knowledge.
- Build a staffing model that supports safe and effective service to the community.
- Identify, procure, and maintain the most optimal equipment and infrastructure to carry out the mission of the Alexandria Fire Department.
