Wreath Laying and Memorial Service at Ivy Hill Cemetery

For Immediate Release: September 29, 2022

The Alexandria Fire Department will observe National Fire Prevention Week on Friday, October 14 with a memorial service and wreath laying at 11 a.m. The solemn ceremony is held each year at Ivy Hill Cemetery, located at 2823 King St., to honor those who have died in the line of duty and members of the Fire Department who have passed away during the preceding 12 months. This year’s ceremony is in person and open to the public.

“It’s important for us to recognize and remember those who risked their own wellbeing to serve our community as fire and emergency service professionals,” said Fire/EMS Chief Corey Smedley. “The Alexandria Fire Department will always remain dedicated to never forgetting and honoring those we’ve lost.”

The public and media representatives are invited to attend the ceremony. Uniformed members of the Alexandria Fire Department, Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, and Fire Department retirees will be present to honor their fallen colleagues.

In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, located at 2932 King St. For additional information, contact Community Outreach Coordinator Firefighter Ashley Whisonant at (703) 746-5217 or  ashley.whisonant@alexandriava.gov.

For media inquiries only, contact Raytevia Evans, Senior Public Information Officer, at (703) 746-5190 or raytevia.evans@alexandriava.gov.
