This pillar focuses on modernizing Alexandria’s transit corridors through the deployment of advanced transportation technologies. These enhancements are designed to reduce bus wait times, improve service reliability, and help buses navigate around traffic congestion, especially during peak travel periods. Smart signal systems can prioritize transit vehicles at intersections, enabling them to move more efficiently through the corridor.
Transit Signal Priority
Project Description: Citywide TSP on Major Corridors
The purpose of this project is to expand the City of Alexandria’s Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system across major corridors to improve bus service reliability, reduce passenger delays, and enhance emergency response times. The TSP system allows transit vehicles to request extended or early green lights at signalized intersections, optimizing traffic flow and improving multimodal efficiency.
This project builds on previous TSP installations and leverages funding from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Smart Scale Program (SMART20). The Citywide TSP expansion focuses on high-capacity transit corridors and integrates with the City’s Adaptive Signal Control and Transportation Management Center (TMC) platforms to enable systemwide monitoring and performance analytics.
By improving coordination between transit and signal operations, this project supports the City’s broader goals of reducing emissions, enhancing travel time reliability, and supporting sustainable mobility for residents and commuters.
