Site Content and Communication
The entire original contents of the City's websites are copyright 1996-2024 by the City of Alexandria, Virginia, unless otherwise noted. You may freely reproduce and distribute, for personal or nonprofit use, any original content on a site produced by the City and not protected from you by password or other security method. In no case may you reproduce or distribute material in such a manner as to misrepresent the City's authorship or purpose of publication, or in any way that violates any applicable law. Any information provided to the City through a City website, or through electronic mail, shall be the exclusive property of the City and the City shall be entitled, unless restricted by law or otherwise noted when you provide the information, to use such comments or information for any purpose whatsoever without notice, consent, or compensation to you.
We have worked hard to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the material on the City's websites. The Code of the City of Alexandria is published online as a convenience to residents and the legal community. Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of material published online, you are advised that the only official edition of the City Code is the printed version maintained by the City Clerk. Downloaded versions are not official. Please note that City Council may have made amendments, additions, or deletions to the City Code subsequent to the last supplementation of the online version of the Code. The printed version of the City Code is available for review in the Office of the City Clerk and at all Alexandria Public Libraries.
Privacy
It is the policy of the City of Alexandria that personal information about you will be collected only to the extent necessary to provide the services or benefits you desire; only appropriate information will be collected; and you will be given the reason the information is collected and be able to examine any related personal records about you which are maintained by the City to the extent provided by law. In order to use certain services we offer, you may be required to submit personal information about yourself. This information may include, but is not limited to, your name, address, account number, property information, and other information used to identify your relationship with the City. This information will be safeguarded in compliance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Should you not provide this information, we may not be able to offer you the services you desire.
Certain parts of the City's websites may make use of the technology commonly known as "cookies" and "HTML5 storage" to enhance the services provided to you. You may disable cookies and HTML5 storage in the preferences of your web browser, but the services relying on cookies and HTML5 storage may not function correctly if you do.
Certain information about you will be automatically recorded by virtue of your use of the City's websites. This information includes the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your computer, the parts of the websites you visited, the type of web browser you used, and the dates and times of your visits. No personal information (such as your name or email address) is automatically recorded when you visit this site, unless you affirmatively provide it.

Although the City of Alexandria will generally not initiate the release of information about you to other individuals or agencies without your knowledge and consent, you should be aware that the City may be required by law to release certain information about you under certain circumstances. The City of Alexandria will strictly comply with the provisions of the Virginia Privacy Protection Act and the Virginia Freedom of Information Act in this regard, as well as with all other laws and court orders governing the release of your information. Personal information, including your electronic mail addresses, that you furnish to the City for the purpose of receiving electronic mail from the City (such as through the Alexandria eNews service), may be withheld from third parties if you make that request in advance. Please note that if you submit information related to an item to be considered by City Council, the information you submit will be published on the City's website as an attachment to the agenda for the meeting at which the item will be considered.

Security
The City's websites are government computer systems and are protected by federal and state laws. Any unauthorized access or changes to the material contained herein will be investigated by local, state, and/or federal law enforcement agencies. Unauthorized users may be fined, imprisoned, or both.
Contests
From time to time, the City may offer contests to increase interest in and traffic on our websites, or to promote City programs. In no case shall any purchase, fee, payment, or other consideration be required as a condition of entry in a contest. All random drawings will be witnessed to ensure fairness. Unless otherwise specified, employees of the City of Alexandria, employees of prize providers, and members of such employees' households are not eligible to win any contest offered on the City's websites. All taxes and fees associated with the receipt of prizes are the responsibility of the winners. The City of Alexandria reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value for prizes advertised. The availability of prizes from a non-City donor shall not constitute endorsement of the donor by the City. Each individual contest may list additional rules for that contest.

The sites accessible through these links are not created, maintained, or controlled by the City, and the City makes no representations concerning their content. In no case shall mention of a non-City entity constitute an endorsement of that entity by the City, nor shall the failure to mention a non-City entity constitute disapproval of that entity by the City.
