Boards and Commissions FAQs
What are boards and commissions?
Boards and Commissions are special interest groups that provide City Council with creative ideas, specific concerns, and recommendations aimed to aid in the progression of the City of Alexandria. These vital groups give Alexandria citizens with specific interests an opportunity to actively serve the community and participate in advancing this great city forward.
Who chooses the members for boards and commissions?
The majority of the Boards and Commission members are selected by the Alexandria City Council Members. Board member appointments are typically held at the first meeting of each month.
Where can I find more information on each board?
Board and commission descriptions, meeting details, and current vacancies can be found here. This page also provides information for future vacancies and current members.
How can I be notified of vacancies?
Position vacancies are advertised through eNews and on the City's website. To receive monthly notifications of board vacancies, sign up for Alexandria eNews.
Can I attend a meeting before I apply?
Yes! Meetings are open to the public. While you are not able to participate in decision-making, this allows you to see if the board is a good fit for you and vice versa. Upcoming meetings can be found on the city's calendar.
How do I apply?
What happens next?
Your application will be reviewed by the City Clerk's Office to ensure it is complete and meets the basic requirements for the vacancy being considered. Once your application is deemed eligible for the vacancy, it is added to the ballot for Council consideration. Before Council appointments, members of Council may reach out to you regarding your application. In addition, you may reach out to members of Council at councilcomment@alexandriava.gov to emphasize your desire to serve.
City Council reviews the applications and makes their appointments at the first City Council meeting of each month. All candidates are notified of the results. Applications for candidates not selected will remain on file for six months unless withdrawn by the applicant or City Council. Applicants selected will receive a welcome packet and be contacted by the board staff for onboarding
