Registration Open for Virtual Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
A DCHS CONNECT NEWS HIGHLIGHT
June 11, 2021--According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in six youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year in the United States. DCHS is offering a virtual training course designed to help laypersons and paraprofessionals learn skills to support adolescents who are experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or crisis.
Youth Mental Health First Aid will be held virtually on July 28 and 29, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and is open to parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers and other caring residents.
The 6.5 hour course teaches risk factors, warning signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use disorders, the effects of the illnesses, an overview of treatments and a five-step action plan for helping someone with symptoms.
Space is limited. Residents interested in the training need to register online.
Alexandria residents can also access Kognito, an online training resource for adults and youth that uses simulation and role-play conversations to help individuals gain skills in recognizing students in mental distress and initiate conversations about concerns and mental health.
