Project Description

The City of Alexandria is pursuing a combined sewer repair project to address sewer back-ups following wet weather events.
 
The project will include:

  • Increasing the size of existing sewer pipes in the intersection of Madison Street and North Saint Asaph Street to provide additional system capacity,  
  • Installing new curb inlets to improve drainage, and  
  • Relocating existing the sewer line on Madison Street to provide better drainage.

Construction

Construction Update

Construction is beginning at the intersection of Madison St. and N. St. Asaph St. and is scheduled for completion in late March 2026.

Test pit drilling is underway and the excavation area has been marked. Excavation of the roadway is scheduled to begin the final week of January; however, this may be delayed until early February due to the major winter storm forecasted for Sunday, January 25. 

 

Construction Hours:

  • Monday through Friday: 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: By special request only
  • Sunday: No construction activity

 

Roadway Closures:

  • South Lane of Madison St.
  • West Lane of N. Asaph St.
  • The roadway will reopen to traffic outside of work hours. 

 

Sidewalk Closures:

  • Southwest corner will be closed.
  • Crosswalk will be closed during excavation.
  • Royal Restaurant will be accessible at all times.
     

Parking Restrictions:

  • No Parking signs have been posted. Please follow all official signs as marked. 

 

Detours/Maintenance of Traffic:

  • Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic and detour signs will posted to provide crossing alternatives.

CONSTRUCTION Outreach

City contractor, Sagres Construction, will be installing new sanitary sewer pipe, new manholes, and capping a portion of the existing sanitary line at the intersection of Madison Street and North Saint Asaph Street starting in late 2025. 

Pre-Construction Community Meeting:

The City held a pre-construction community meeting, featuring a presentation on project construction followed by a question-and-answer session.
