Project Description

The City of Alexandria has approximately 783 bus stops and 120 shelters, some of which date from the 1970s and 1980s. Bus stops are regularly cleaned and maintained in coordination with DASH and WMATA to meet basic standards of safety, accessibility, comfort and cleanliness. In 2015, the City started to install new bus shelters at 28 priority locations throughout the City.

The City of Alexandria is now installing an additional 20 bus shelters to improve the public transit experience. Some locations do not currently have a bus shelter, while others will have the existing shelter replaced. The site selection process prioritized locations with high ridership and construction feasibility. More information on bus shelter design and amenities can be found on the Bus Stop Program webpage.

The project aligns with goals of the Alexandria Mobility Plan and Alexandria Transit Vision Plan.

Design Overview

In 2019, staff identified 82 potential bus stop locations to install new or replace older bus shelters. The project team evaluated these 82 potential locations for feasibility and selected 20 locations to receive new bus shelters.

From 2019 through 2021, the City selected a new bus shelter model that is less expensive and easier to maintain than the previous custom-designed shelter through a competitive process that was approved by VDOT. In 2021, the City began the procurement process for an engineering design firm to perform surveying and to design the sites. The design is underway for these 20 sites, and the installation of these 20 shelters is anticipated to begin in 2026. Future phases to install additional shelters will follow.
