Project Description
The City of Alexandria repaired the Holmes Run culvert at Van Dorn St. Each year, Federal officials conduct bridge inspections throughout the city as part of the Bridge Inspection Program, in an effort to extend the life of bridges by maintaining their condition. Following the completion of the 2020 inspection, the City established a long-term maintenance plan and identified a series of immediate repairs required to extend the life of this culvert. The solution for this bridge included preventive and restorative maintenance such as repairs to the metal pipe, and concrete bridge walls and slabs.

Bridge Inspections and Maintenance
Transportation throughout the City of Alexandria relies on a network of infrastructure, which includes bridges. As part of this expansive network, the City maintains 29 highway bridges and more than 40 pedestrian bridges.
Construction
The City of Alexandria contracted Fort Myer Construction to repair the Van Dorn Street culvert over Holmes Run. Work crews installed culvert protection, and repaired the culvert concrete and metal pipe.
General construction activities were permitted to occur Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Community Meeting
The City held a public meeting to present the project and answer questions on Thursday, July 20, 2023, from 7 - 8 p.m. at Patrick Henry Recreation Center, Multipurpose Room C, 4653 Taney Avenue, Alexandria, VA, 22304.
Construction Impacts
The following temporary impacts to Holmes Run Parkway between North Ripley Street and Van Dorn Street occurred during construction hours:
- Closure of the eastbound lane of Holmes Run Parkway
- Closure of a small segment (no more than 500 feet) of Holmes Run Trail
- Curbside parking restrictions adjacent to the project site along the eastbound lane
Flaggers from the construction crew were present to direct traffic, assist trail users with crossing to the sidewalk on the opposite side of Holmes Run Parkway, and ensure residents have access to their homes.
