Project Description

The City of Alexandria enhanced the sanitary and combined sewer system along the 300 and 400 blocks of North Alfred Street to improve performance and increase capacity. This upgrade addressed recurring sewer backups caused by root intrusion—where tree roots enter and obstruct aging pipes—particularly during heavy rainfall.

As part of the project, the City replaced outdated 10" reinforced concrete pipes with approximately 230 linear feet of 18” combined sanitary sewer pipe and 500 linear feet of 15” sanitary sewer pipe. Around 35 property laterals were reconnected to the new main line. The work also included installing three new 48" manholes and one 72" doghouse manhole, while maintaining four existing manholes to support long-term system reliability.

After the pipes and manholes are installed underground, the project finishes with road repairs, including new asphalt and striping as seen on the 300 block of N Alfred St.
When the underground work is complete, the roadway is restored with new asphalt and striping for vehicular and pedestrian safety.
