Budget Question #100: What would be the costs and impacts of adding a pilot of an e-bike and/or e-cargo bike to our fleet inventory for use by staff to attend events/meetings around town and for departments to use for trail maintenance, site inspections and other event related tasks? (Councilmember Bagley)

Response: The cost to purchase a single e-bike and/or an e-cargo bike would be roughly $6,000. The price range of e-bikes and e-cargo bikes ranges from $2,000 to $6,000 for 2-wheel or 3-wheel, depending on the quality and brand. In addition to the bike, the City would also need to consider maintenance and purchase insurance, storage, and auxiliary equipment (helmets, pads, lights, saddlebags, racks, locks, reflective vests, etc.). A pilot program would enable staff to track use and mileage to determine how much usage an e-bike or e-cargo bike would generate, as well as whether additional bikes would be required. Staff would recommend that such a pilot involve no more than five e-bikes and related ancillary equipment for a total cost not to exceed $30,000.
