Budget Question # 32: What is the current staffing (authorized versus vacant) for the City’s School Crossing Guard program? What would be the fiscal impact of a transfer of the budget authority for the City’s School Crossing Guards to the Alexandria City Public Schools? What other models for staffing these positions have been explored? (Mayor Wilson)

Response:

A School Crossing Guard position is 0.375 FTE, or a part-time employee at 15 hours per week. The current authorized staffing for the School Crossing Guard program is 27 crossing guards (10.125 FTEs). Of those, 17 are currently filled, while 10 are vacant. The program is supervised by a full-time supervisor (pay grade 15). The ongoing cost of the program is $610,000, with up to $100,000 in additional one-time vehicle, equipment, and uniforms costs for any assets not transferred from the City to the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). To improve recruitment and retention, staff will examine opportunities to make the positions full-time by combining duties with other functions either within the City government or ACPS.
