What is a Transportation Management Center?
The City’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) monitors traffic signals, intersections, and roadways to proactively deploys traffic management strategies to reduce congestion and coordinate with state and local authorities during special events, snow removal, emergencies, or other planned or unplanned events. The City’s TMC is used in partnership with the Alexandria Police Department and Department of Emergency & Customer Communications to manage special events and emergencies From the TMC, the City can view traffic congestion, bus movement, and other information to make more informed decisions about how to best move traffic in the City.
Project Background
The City’s first Transportation Management Center was located in City Hall and moved to Business Center Drive approximately 10 years ago. Since that time, technology, cameras and remote programming of signals allows for more opportunities to better and proactively manage traffic through the TMC in Alexandria. Through the Intelligent Transportation Project, the City was awarded funding to expand the number of traffic cameras in the City, thereby increases capabilities of the TMC. DASH bus trackers, pavement sensors and Bluetooth traffic monitoring devices have been added to the system to help manage day to day operations as well as special events such as the WMATA Shutdown last summer. Future funding through this project will enable the TMC to expand and incorporate a real time conditions map showing everything going on in the City at a glance.
Features of the TMC
-
- Traffic cameras
- Traffic signal control
- Deployment of Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology on vehicles
- Transit signal priority
- Pavement Sensors - measures temperature and ice on pavement (for snow emergencies)
- Emergency Operations Support (EOS)
