The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is transitioning to a new provider to handle inmate communications including phones and tablets. The switch from Securus to Smart Communications is scheduled to begin the week of June 24.
Inmates have been advised to keep their phone account balances at a minimum beginning June 24 because there will be a delay in funds being returned from Securus. Family and friends may sign up now with the new provider by visiting www.smartinmate.com and creating an account, however the account will not be active until the systems have been switched over.
Inmates, families, and friends are advised to be prepared for some downtime in phone and tablet access as the transition takes place.
With the new system, inmates will receive four free 15-minute phones calls, two free digital messages and two free 20-minute video visits each week.
Information about the new service is also being provided to attorneys.
