Walk Zone Pilot for 200 Block of King Street Begins Nov. 22
The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation & Environmental Services is excited to announce the launch of a pilot walk-only zone for the 200 block of King Street, beginning this holiday season. This initiative, requested by the Mayor and City Council at their September 2024 Legislative Meeting, aims to transform the 200 block into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space.
The pilot will allow the City to test the feasibility of this change while gathering valuable community feedback. (The City conducted similar pilots in the Unit and 100 blocks of King Street, both of which are now permanent pedestrian zones.)
What to Expect: The walk zone project will be conducted in two phases:
- Phase 1: From November 22, 2024 through January 6, 2025, the 200 block of King Street will temporarily close to vehicular traffic. During this period, residents and visitors can enjoy a lively, welcoming walking area, enhanced by the holiday atmosphere. After Phase 1, the block will reopen in January and February to address any issues.
- Phase 2: The second phase will run from March 14 to September 30, 2025. This extended period will allow for additional community engagement and data collection. Based on the outcomes of the pilot, the City Council will consider a permanent walk zone ordinance in the fall of 2025.
