Vietnam War Veterans Plaque Dedication on June 14
For Immediate Release: June 13, 2024
Alexandria, Va. – Veterans American Legion Post 24 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 609, in partnership with the Office of Historic Alexandria, are memorializing Alexandrians who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The unveiling and dedication of this plaque, honoring the 68 Alexandrians who died fighting the Vietnam War, will take place on Flag Day, Friday, June 14th. The program will begin inside the American Legion Post 24 Ballroom, 400 Cameron Street, at 6 p.m. A reception will follow the marker dedication.
“We must honor the bravery and sacrifice of our Vietnam War Veterans,” said director of the Office of Historic Alexandria, Gretchen Bulova. “These new plaques serve as a permanent reminder of their service and our gratitude.”
The public and media representatives are invited to attend the ceremony, which will start at 6 p.m. Please arrive by 5:45 p.m. Street parking and nearby garages are available. Refer to the map of garages on the City of Alexandria’s parking page.
The Veterans Service Organization (VSO), based in Alexandria, initiated a fundraising campaign last December to fund the placement of a Vietnam Memorial plaque at the Alexandria War Memorial at Alexandria Union Station as well as a duplicate on the American Legion Post 24 building. The first name plaque was dedicated this past Memorial Day, May 27, with over 100 community members in attendance.
