The Office of Voter Registration and Elections is Seeking Feedback on Proposed West End Precinct Changes
For Immediate Release: July 24, 2023
The Office of Voter Registration and Elections is seeking feedback on proposed changes and additions to the Election Day precincts in the West End. The proposal would add two new West End precincts to help lower the per-precinct voter count and reduce wait times.
The Office of Voter Registration and Elections is seeking feedback from voters on these proposed changes. Feedback can be given in a few different ways:
- You can attend the Public Feedback and Information Session on August 8, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the Redella S. “Del” Pepper Community Resource Center. The Redella S. “Del” Pepper Community Resource Center is located at 4850 Mark Center Drive, Alexandria, VA 22311.
- You can complete this survey: (https://www.research.net/r/AlexandriaVAprecinctfeedback) This survey will be available through August 21st.
- If you cannot attend the Public Feedback and Information Session and/or cannot access the survey link, please contact the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 703-746-4050 to request a physical copy of the survey.
Currently, three of the four precincts west of Interstate 395 have approximately 5000 registered voters. The proposed precincts will have fewer registered voters, which will help reduce wait times during the upcoming presidential election. The proposed changes would only affect where a voter can vote on election day. The proposed changes will not affect who is on the voter's ballot. Per state law, if more than 4000 voters from any precinct turn out to vote in a presidential election, that precinct must be broken up into smaller sections. The Presidential Election is next year, and it is possible that the turnout will be high enough in these precincts to cross the 4000-voter threshold, and the City would be legally required to redraw the boundaries. Redrawing the boundaries now, rather than waiting for the legal mandate, allows more time for public feedback.
The Office of Voter Registration and Elections wants to thank you, in advance, for your feedback and appreciate your suggestions and comments.
