Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the City of Alexandria
The City of Alexandria will observe Hispanic Heritage Month, joining a nationwide celebration, from Sunday, September 15 to Tuesday, October 15.
This is a time to honor the contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the Hispanic and Latino/x* community to the United States and our own City.

City Hall Lights and Flags
Residents and visitors can look forward to seeing 20 Latin American flags waving in Market Square (300 King St.) throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.
In the evenings, the matching national colors will light up City Hall.
About the Hispanic and Latino/x Population
The Hispanic and Latino/x population is an incredibly diverse group consisting of a multitude of nationalities, cultural backgrounds, and experiences. Some of our Hispanic community members are recent immigrants to the country, while others have family lineages that stretch past the founding of our nation.
Hear stories from Latino/x people in the City: read first-hand Oral Histories from Hispanic Community.
The City has a long history of residents who have immigrated here from Central and South America. In the 1980s, a community from El Salvador settled in the neighborhood we now call “Chirilagua.” Discover the cultural history of Arlandria – Chirilagua on our website.
* The terms 'Hispanic' and 'Latino/x' are used interchangeably to describe individuals who identify with or relate to Spanish and Latin American origin or descent.
