City of Alexandria Facilities Closed Monday, January 6
Due to inclement weather, City facilities and offices will be closed Monday, January 6, 2025. Essential personnel and facilities necessary for emergency and weather response will remain in operating status.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that will go into effect Sunday at 10 p.m. through Tuesday at 1 a.m. Impacted areas include northern Virginia, central Maryland, and portions of D.C. During this time, residents should expect heavy mixed precipitation (snow/sleet), with totals between 5 and 9 inches. Some areas might see up to 12 inches. The highest snowfall is expected overnight Sunday into early Monday morning.
Here is how the City is responding:
The Department of Community & Health Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will operate with extended hours from 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 4 until 7 a.m. on Thursday, January 9. DCHS is monitoring the weather and will adjust operating hours as needed.
The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) recreation centers will also serve as warming centers during their normal operating hours. Hours may be extended if needed. A full list of RPCA recreation centers is available here.
All collection services for trash, yard waste, compost, and recycling will slide one day.
The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) centers will be closed, and any bulk or metal services scheduled by appointment will be rescheduled.
Paratransit Service: The City’s DOT paratransit program has canceled paratransit trips outside of Alexandria city limits from noon Sunday to 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
Prepare for winter weather:
With the weather expected to drop to dangerously cold temperatures, be prepared and know where you can go to get out of the cold. If in need of a place to warm up, consider visiting a restaurant, shopping mall, community center, or a local library.
Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication and access to power.
If you have a pet, be sure to provide them access to a warm shelter, preferably indoors, as well as plenty of food and water.
Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking, and weather stripping. Keep pipes from freezing by allowing faucets to drip, keeping cabinet doors open, and garage doors closed.
