Cameron Run Sediment Removal
Project Summary
Phase: Design
Status: Active
Location: King Street Metro/Eisenhower Avenue
Managing Dept.: Project Implementation
Sponsor Dept.: Transportation & Environmental Services
Project Description
The Cameron Run Sediment Removal Project will provide flood carrying capacity for Cameron Run.
The City will perform stream maintenance on Cameron Run between Weir #3 and the I-495 Beltway Bridge to remove excess sediment that accumulates in the stream. This will increase the stream’s capacity during flood events and reduce the likelihood of flooding within the FEMA AE flood zone.
The primary task will include removing large sand/gravel bars, removal of woody vegetation from stream banks, removing debris, and selective removal of dead and downed trees throughout the runs. The stream maintenance activities will align within the floodplain boundaries. The Cameron Run Sediment Removal Project is expected to protect public health and property, and reduce the likelihood of flooding, as it improves conveyance.
Project Background
Cameron Run is a 42-square-mile watershed located largely within the Capital Beltway and drains to the Potomac River. The watershed is located within multiple jurisdictions including Fairfax County, Falls Church, and the City of Alexandria. Cameron Run flows through the City of Alexandria and discharges into the Potomac River. The project segment is located between Eisenhower Avenue and the I-495 corridor just upstream of the I-495 Capital Beltway Bridge and immediately downstream of Weir #3.
The City of Alexandria performs periodic stream maintenance, as a part of flood mitigation practices, whereby accumulated sediment is removed from Cameron Run to help mitigate flooding impacts along Cameron Run where the City has jurisdictional responsibility, up to the City boundary at the I-495 Capital Beltway Bridge Right-of-Way.

Design Update
The planning for the Cameron Run Sediment Removal Project is complete, and the project is currently in the design stage. The City is in the process of procuring a design contractor to produce the design plans and construction drawings. Upon awarding a contract to a design firm, the City plans to meet with residents and stakeholders. Notices will be distributed to residents prior to the start of work.
Planning Overview
Sediment removal from Cameron Run requires performing a topographic survey, preparing streambed profiles up to which accumulated sediments require removal, performing calculations to determine how much excess sediment has been accumulated, conducting geotechnical tests, and removing vegetation that can trap sediment from the streambanks.
The investigation determined excess sediment needs to be removed from Cameron Run to improve flood-carrying capacity from upstream of the I-95 bridge to Weir #3.
