ARHA Honors Sheriff's Office with Community Champion Award
At their February board meeting, the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA) recognized the Sheriff’s Office with the Community Champion Award for partnering with them to support their residents. In honoring the Sheriff’s Office, ARHA specifically cited our Community Services Unit and awarded plaques to Sheriff Sean Casey and Sergeant Victor Ignacio.
Gaynelle Bowden-Diaz, ARHA’s Director of Resident and Community Services, noted that the selection was for “a community partner and/or individuals, who have significantly contributed to our mission in serving our residents and ultimately improving their quality of life.” ASO has long supported ARHA’s efforts and deputies frequently participate in events in ARHA neighborhoods.
Recent engagement includes reading to students at the Ruby Tucker Center, coordinating gifts and guests at the Winter Wonderland at Charles Houston, assisting at an archaeology program in Samuel Madden, working with seniors at the Robust Walkathon, helping distribute free backpacks and coats to children, and promoting public safety at National Night Out and community cookouts in several neighborhoods.
Ms. Bowden-Diaz also noted ASO’s commitment to ensuring that residents have access to services by assisting with transportation to and from programs, translating at events, and delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound residents when weather or other emergency circumstances arise.
“We love working with our neighbors and being recognized by ARHA is a special honor because they understand the importance of partnerships, particularly when it comes to residents’ well-being,” said Sheriff Casey. “I thank the board and Ms. Bowden-Diaz for naming ASO their ‘Community Champion.’”
