The City of Alexandria invites the public to celebrate Building Safety Month on Friday, May 5, with a Kick-Off event in Market Square (301 King St.). This annual awareness month recognizes the importance of building safety and the code professionals who help keep the public safe. This year’s theme is ‘It Starts With YOU!’
Event highlights will include a proclamation signing by Mayor Justin Wilson, remarks by City Manager James Parajon, and a keynote address by the International Code Council’s Immediate Past President Cindy Davis. There will be FREE TRAINING, RAFFLES, LUNCH, and EXHIBITS from City departments and building safety stakeholders.
Building Safety Month, sponsored by the International Code Council, is part of an international campaign celebrated in May to raise awareness about building safety. This campaign emphasizes the need for the adoption of modern building codes and helps the public understand the importance of developing and maintaining safe and sustainable structures.
The City’s code officials ensure the safety of vital public infrastructure and services, and protect residents from fires, weather – related events, and structural collapses. Through the adoption of modern building codes, the City can foster sustainable economic development and allow greater investment in our community.
The International Code Council, its members, and a diverse partnership of professionals from the building construction, design, and safety communities come together with other stakeholders to promote building safety through informational events, legislative briefings, and more. These events help us recognize the need for safe and sustainable structures where we live, work, and play.
