Park & Recreation Commission to Hold a Public Hearing on Athletic Field Lighting Proposals
For Immediate Release: July 11, 2022
The Park & Recreation Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the Patrick Henry Recreation Center (located at 4653 Taney Ave.) to discuss the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities’ (RPCA) proposed installation of athletic field lighting at multiple athletic fields in the City. If you are unable to attend the public hearing, comments will be accepted by mail or email until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2022. Please mail written comments to RPCA, ATTN: Jack Browand, 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
The addition of athletic field lighting will provide additional capacity to accommodate current and increasing scholastic and community program needs within the City’s fixed field resources. The project will support the City Council 2022 Community Priority to Support Youth and Families by expanding for capacity for youth programs, and the City’s goal of providing equitable access to facilities and services.
City Council approved funding for the lighting of two athletic fields, pending Special Use Permit approval by the Planning Commission and City Council, in FY 2023 (July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023). The lighting of additional fields, pending permit approval and approved funding, would be implemented over a three-to-five-year period.
The Park & Recreation Commission will receive public comment on July 21, 2022 and provide a recommendation to the Planning Commission and City Council regarding the proposed addition of athletic field lighting at multiple athletic fields in the City.
